Guidelines for Off-Season Athletic Programs

The success of any athletic program at any high school depends on its coaches and upon their support of each other’s programs. It is imperative there be a cohesive relationship within the school’s coaching staff. The following guidelines have been drafted to address these issues in order to promote good will and help avoid conflict within our athletic departments. In most cases the guidelines are re-affirmations of the present standards of the UHSAA policies or WCSD expectations. Our facilities will not be made available to any program that is not in harmony within this philosophy (See WSD Policy GC). These guidelines are based on these following assumptions:

Coaches will:

  1. Support other coaches
  2. Respect the season of every sport by not providing, encouraging, or advertising non-seasonal athletic opportunities with conflict with the in-season sports. This district's policy defines "out-of-season" as the time outside of an activity’s season, as defined by the UHSAA calendar, and emphasizes that camps and clinics should not conflict with in-season sports.

Coaches will not:

  1. Encourage athletes to remain one sport (year-round) and discourage participation in other sports during the year.
  2. Require excess participation by athletes during the summer months or other off-season periods determined by the UHSAA to be acceptable for limited activities.
  3. Require participation in summer of other off-season activities as an eligibility criterion to team membership or playing time during the season.

UHSAA Policy on In-Season and Off-Season Activities

  1. The Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) emphasizes that in-season sports have priority over off-season activities. Coaches are expected to respect the season of every sport by not providing, encouraging, or advertising non-seasonal athletic opportunities that conflict with in-season sports.
  1. Coaches must strictly adhere to the UHSAA's dead time periods, during which no coaching activities are permitted. This includes prohibitions on practices, drills, or any form of coaching during these designated periods.
  1. Off-season athletic activities should not include students who are participating in an in-season sport. Additionally, the amount of time spent in summer camps, clinics, or tournaments should not be excessive, and such activities should not conflict with in-season sports.
