May 9, 2018 Board Meeting Minutes

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR WAYNE SCHOOL DISTRICT HELD AT LOA ELEMENTARY ON WEDNESDAY MAY 9, 2018 AT 6:00 PM.

THOSE PRESENT:

Cory Anderson – President

ADMINISTRATION

Cory Anderson called the meeting to order.  He announced we would begin with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a reverence from Superintendent John Fahey.

RECOGNITION:  Cory Anderson described the new recognition coins.  Three coins were presented to individuals. 

APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES:  April Torgerson made a motion to accept the minutes for last month.  Jeffery Chappell seconded.  All in favor.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Heather Okerlund answered questions about the accounts payable.

April Torgerson made a motion to accept the accounts payable.  Shawn Davis seconded.  All in favor.

Financial review.  Heather Okerlund gave an update on draft budgets for next fiscal year.  Also reviewed summary and detail budgets for the current year.

INFORMATION ITEMS

SPED Director Report:  Diena Riddle handed out the USBE-SES Report for FFY 2016.  Diena described the report and said we have been placed in the USBE Supporting Tier with a determination of Meets Requirements, which is the highest level you can get. 

Superintendent’s Report:  Superintendent John Fahey provided weekly notes and a summary activity calendar for the school activities for the month of May.  Superintendent John Fahey said that they’ve been working on the mission, vision and goals, and action steps and that we will continue to review the goals on a yearly basis.  He provided the teacher questionnaire survey draft and wondered if there were questions to add or remove before it is sent out.  Also provided a summary of the NSBA notes from the conference and he and the board discussed next steps.  Superintendent John Fahey and the board discussed dates for the board and BA reviews, and tentatively scheduled Thursday July 12th.  Superintendent John Fahey also provided a calendar for his travel for the month of June and discussed the different meetings. Superintendent John Fahey said they are planning a coding camp this summer for the fourth week in June.  They’re going to start at the middle school and try and get 25 students, likely in grades 4-9.  Superintendent John Fahey said he met with Mike Olson, the county attorney, and they are going to meet later in May to go over juvenile justice.

BUSINESS ITEMS

Carpet bids: Loa Builders $20,874 Lemco Design $24,140, 3 Dollar Carpet $24,790.  April Torgerson made a motion to accept the bid from Loa Builders.  Jeffery Chappell seconded.   All in favor.

Policies:  Second Reading:  April Torgerson made a motion to approve second reading of DMC Use of District Email for Political Purposes, FED Student Data Protection, FHAA Safe Schools Alcohol and Drugs, FHAE Safe Schools Disruptive Student Behavior, FHAF Safe Schools Emergency Safety Interventions, FI Student Fees Fines and Charges, DLB Grievances Regarding Abusive Conduct.  Shawn Davis seconded.   All in favor.

New hires:  Curtis Whipple made a motion to approve new hires pending back ground checks.  Shawn Davis seconded.  All in favor.

BOARD MEMBER ITEMS

Curtis Whipple:  Asked about our drug policy for staff and discussed approaches and procedures with the board, Superintendent, and Business Administrator.

Cory Anderson:  Discussed the role of the board and their efforts to improve their role awareness.  Also their commitment to supporting the administrators and listening to constituents and directing people to the proper channels. 

Curtis Whipple made a motion to go into closed session at 7:53 pm for the purpose permitted by Utah Code Annotated Section 52-4-205(1)(a).  Jeffery Chappell seconded.

Cory Anderson declared us back in open meeting at 9:01 pm.

April Torgerson made a motion to adjourn at 9:01 pm.  Curtis Whipple seconded.  All in favor.
