Personal Device Policy Starting This Fall
May 7, 2026
Dear Wayne School District Families,
With the end of the school year just around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to share an important update about changes coming to our schools this fall.
The Utah Legislature recently passed Senate Bill 69, which establishes a "bell-to-bell" policy prohibiting the use of personal electronic devices during the school day — from the first bell to the last. In alignment with this new state law, Wayne School District will not permit students to use or access personal electronics on campus during school hours, including but not limited to:
- Cell phones, smartphones, or iPods
- Smart watches
- AirPods or other personal headphones/earbuds
- Personal laptops or tablets
Exceptions will be made for medical needs or other qualifying circumstances as outlined in the law, such as students with applicable IEP or 504 plans.
We are still finalizing the details of our district policy and will share more specifics before the school year begins. In the meantime, we encourage families to begin talking with your students about these upcoming changes and to start planning accordingly.
We're excited about the positive impact this change can have on student focus, connection, and learning. As always, your partnership is invaluable, and we look forward to working together to make this a smooth transition.
If you have questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to your school's front office.
Sincerely,
Randy Shelley
Superintendent
Wayne County School District
